Great fishing and weather in Sooke now. Cod, Halibut and Crab are open and so are the patios at the local restaurants and breweries. Last few trips out guests have loaded up on tasty Rockfish/Quillbacks and Crab. Halibut will still be good until about mid June when the Dogfish/sharks move in. Coho salmon are scheduled to open June 1st so we can fish for and retain some salmon species in our area. I have a new Skipper onboard Tristan McMillan who is looking after making 2Reel available 7 days a week again. New upgrades to the vessels structural integrity and electronics have allowed for continued heavy usage in rough conditions and some longer runs to some farther Halibut grounds. As the weather gets better our fishing calendar is booking up. Give me a call and we can see what's available.
Tight Lines,
Ron

Crabbing in the harbour has slowed down a bit, I just drop more traps and move them around to different locations until we get what we want. Drop on every trip unless guests request not too. Contrary to popular belief Crabs enjoy fresh bait as opposed to rotten freezer burnt food. Chicken and fish seem to work the best. I'm careful to keep chicken frozen, use gloves and keep the boat clean to avoid any contamination. Traps dropped for 6 to 8 hour periods seem to do as well or better than those dropped overnight in my experience. TOP

Dennis and his crew out for a Halibut fish landed 1 today. Have been travelling West and hitting them pretty consistently on Herring anchored in 70 to 240ft of water depending on how fast the current is moving. Some larger Halibut coming in too. Rockfish and Lingcod are open as well. We are starting to see Coho salmon finning on the surface, they will open to retention June 1st. TOP

Fished with Moritz and Emily, young couple from Alberta for Halibut this morning. With a good weather prediction but some early morning choppy water, we pushed 2Reel up the coast to our spot. Moritz watched the rod as a larger 111cm Halibut played with the Herring and then pulled down hard. We were in shallow water and the beast did make a trip back to the bottom after coming to the boat. But of coarse we got him in the end. Nice fish guys! TOP
April 02, 2023Morning Charterwith Ron
Fished with regular guests Fred and Sarah and their crew for Halibut today. Weather was decent, ran up the coast a bit. Great tide scheduled to be high at late morning. Landed 2 Hali, 1 sole, and 1 Pacific Cod for a bunch of future bottom fish feasts. Tide changes near mid morning or noon tend to work great in our area. TOP
April 01, 2023Morning Charterwith Ron
Regular guest Fred and his crew came in for their first of the season Halibut trips. First day was a little windier than we would like but still fishable. Landed a couple of by catch fish while looking for the Halibut. A True/Pacific Cod and a Sole were addded to the 2 Halibut we caught. One large Hali about 50lbs and smaller one about 10/12lbs. Great day fishing with this fun crew. TOP

Fished with Marco and his family for winter Spring/Chinook salmon. Fishing was very slow as it can be at this time of year. August 26, 2022Morning Charterwith Ron
Spring/Chinook salmon fishing this morning on my own to put some fish in the freezer. Another warm and sunny day on the Strait in Sooke. August anglers are typiclly allowed one Chinook salmon per license per day. This is normally our busiest time of year as fishing guides, many people are in the area looking to book trips. The Chinooks are the largest salmon species in the Pacific and this is the time to target them. The weather is at its best at this time in our area. Best time for large Chinooks in our area August to about mid September depending on when the rains come. TOP
August 22, 2022Morning Charterwith Ron
Some great Cod and Crab fishing today with Chris and his crew. Cod is usually open in our area from June 1st to September 30th, and can make for some great table fare when the salmon are not biting. Crab is open all year long. TOP
August 20, 2022Morning Charterwith Ron
Family of four, Dad and Mom with young daughter and son were treated to one of the boats best Chinook salmon hauls of the season. We trolled for the Harbour mouth towards Otter Point staying in 100 to 120ft of water the whole time. Landed 4 nice Springs, one on the top line without a flasher, all salmon caught on spoons. Warm and sunny, calm water, no boats, one of my favorite trolls. TOP
July 05, 2022Morning Charterwith Ron
Fished Coho salmon yesterday with Ken from Ontario, Coho are open to 2 hatchery salmon per person per day. Cod, Halibut and Crab are also open and around in good numbers. We played probably close to 20 salmon, putting four hatcheries in the net. Calm water allowed us to see the Coho on the surface. Fished the salmon very shallow on the downrigger, only 25 to 30ft down. Always something open to take home for dinner! TOP
February 27, 2022Morning Charterwith Ron
Fished with Jordan and his crew today for Chinook salmon concentrating on an area West of Sooke harbour near the Tin Shed and Otter Point trailer park. Great day, everyone had lots of chances on the rods, the girls landing the larger fish (of coarse). We ran Coyote Live Image green spoons and glow white hootchies close to the bottom all day. Saw lots of gulls on the surface, and thats where the fish were. Lots bait on the screen in those areas too. Found Herring in the bellies of the fish as well. Ended up with 7 Springs, largest around 10lbs and some nice male Dungeness Crabs. TOP
February 20, 2022Morning Charterwith Ron
Been trying out a new trip in the harbour pulling Crab traps for guests which are on the boat for about 30 minutes total. We simply pull pre baited Crab traps and you get to keep all the Crabs up to your legal limit. Done about eight of them so far, and everyone has gotten Crabs. Locals in Sooke have been really responding to this adventure mostly through Instagram and Facebook posts. The Crabbing continues to be excellent this year. TOP
January 02, 2022Morning Charterwith Ron
Fished out front of Sooke Harbour mouth with a friend for winter Chinook salmon. Trolled glow and green hootchies and Cuddlefish on short 18 to 24 inch leaders behind bright green flashers, keeping the gear a few feet off the bottom in 110 to 130ft of water. Consistant action, releasing small under size fish as well. Landed last keeper as a thunder storm rolled in. Another very productive day trolling for salmon. TOP
November 11, 2021Morning Charterwith Ron
Fished the Sooke Harbour mouth with 1 guest onboard. Weather was cool, flat water, light cool wind coming out of the harbour. Trolling a Peetz Sylvesters secret and a glow white hootchy at the bottom in 115ft to 125ft of water, bright green flashers. pretty steady action, not huge, but great eating salmon this time of year. See video on the Facebook page for more information. TOP

Fished the weekend with Andre and his crew for winter Chinook salmon and Halibut. Halibut was a slow start so spent most of our time on winter Chinook/Spring salmon. Landed 9 salmon in the 2 trips over the weekend, 0 on the Halibut. Lots of rain on day 1, day 2 not so bad. Great weekend with this group that stayed at the Prestige Hotel for a short walk down the dock to my boat in the morning. TOP

Fishing for Halibut with Tyler and his crew, early 7am start, run up the West coast in calm water to a favorite Hali spot. Fished in shallow water, so no dogfish (sharks) to steal our bait. Tylers' guests landed their first Halibut, lots of splashing excitement at the side of the boat. Some nice Dungeness Crabs in the traps on the way back in too.

Fished with Paris, Chris, and Frank for Halibut today, pick up was at 7am from the Sooke Public dock located beside the Prestige Hotel overlooking Sooke Harbour. First we dropped 3 freshly baited Crab traps in the Harbour, Then we traveled approx.6 miles up the foggy West coast to drop the anchor in 180ft. of water and prepared our gear with fresh Herring to lure in some Halibut. The fog cleared around noon. We got our Halibut action in the afternoon flooding tide, the first one at 2pm and another at 2:30pm, both took the gear hard which provided some great excitement on deck. Pulled the gear at 3:30pm and headed home, pulling 2 Redrock and 1 nice Dungeness Crab out of the traps on the way in. TOP

Fished with Cat and John this morning at Otter Point, flat water and warm sunny weather well into September is normal for our area. Second pass Cat tagged into one of the boats' best fish all season! His largest Chinook salmon so far for sure. Next it was John's turn hooking into a nice one about 13lbs. We trolled around for quite a few hours finding that the morning was definately the best for action. TOP

August 26, 2019Morning Charterwith Ron
Fished with returning guests Al and Mike for chinook salmon this morning at Otter Point. Great warm sunny morning, trolling our spoons in flat water. Al had a nice Spring to the boat first pass which spat the hook out at the boat. Mike was next, and landing his fish, took first bragging rights for the morning. Al had to wait a few passes before he had another opportunity, but when he did, he answered back with a large white Spring. We were trolling from the point to third rock exclusively in 70 to 100ft of water with the gear at 50/60ft on the downriggers. TOP
August 25, 2019Morning Charterwith Ron
Fished with Mike today, last minute charter, he was staying at Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina and decided to go out. Despite great weather, sunshine and flat water, the Chinook salmon were not biting for us this morning. We did cut the trip slightly shorter, which does not help matters much. We did pull our limit of awesome sized Crab, which seem to have just moved into the harbour. Great consolation catch. TOP
August 24, 2019Morning Charterwith Ron
Fished with Justin,Curtis,Mike and Perry this morning West of Otter Point. Slower morning for us. Curtis landed a nice Chinook on the first pass. We saw Humpback whales and Orcas later in the morning. First time resident Orcas had been seen in the Strait in quite a while. Possibly why the fishing was slower.

Fished with Don and his brother in-law Saul West of Otter Point. Sunny, calm morning we trolled a favorite spot in 80ft of water with the gear at 50/60ft on the downrigger. Got into a big Spring on the first pass which schooled Don on how to fight by racing toward the boat. Saul then had a turn, and managed to land a good Chinook salmon. The Springs stopped biting early, and the rest of the morning was Pink salmon fishing. Good to have some first time salmon fishers get a catch of fish. TOP

Fished another full day with Kathleen and Doug from the Calgary area, second day of the Sooke Salmon Enhancement Derby. We tried the Sooke Bluffs this morning on a "hot tip" from the day before. Fished with Paul and his father Jean Marc for Pink salmon this morning off Secretary Island using small Pink squirts. They are tied on short 18 inch leaders and run with flashers only 10ft from the downrigger ball. I find this really helps you target the Pink salmon with a fast moving Pink lure that looks like krill, their most common food. Paul and Jean Marc had a great time limiting out on Pink salmon. TOP
July 20, 2019Morning Charterwith Ron
Fished with Faizel, Jeff, and his son Kevin for salmon this morning, leaving Sooke harbour at 8am, (late start) we were getting into salmon right away. Headed out to Secretary Island and began trolling pink hootchies at 70ft on the downriggers. Played and landed our limit of Pink salmon, clear and sunny weather, great day. The couple was not prepared for that much fish. You may need to purchase a cooler and ice for transporting your fish, maybe even a vacuum packer to properly package and freeze the salmon. TOP
July 17, 2019Morning Charterwith Ron

Fished with Karl,Gene,Nick and Jennifer from the mainland this morning, tried for Cod first but the current was ripping to fast for us, packed up and ran West to a favorite Halibut spot. There were 3 other boats there on arrival. Dropped the anchor and herring down immediately getting into Spiny Dogfish (small Sharks), the crew not wanting them, we released them. Wind started to come up earlier than predictions indicated. Finally as we were discussing packing up do to weather, Karl's rod went over hard with a nice Halibut. A few tense moments getting it to the surface, as it ran back to the bottom after Karl had reeled it about half way up. After landing it, we pulled anchor and headed home with 2Reel2 beside us. TOP

Fished with Tom,Paul,AJ,and Chad for Halibut off one of our local close spots on another warm sunny calm day. They landed one, killed and cleaned it right away, skinned it back at the dock, and marinated it in lemon, garlic, s+p and herbs and bbq'd it at the condo. It was amazing! The boys also hooked into a sweet 41b Halibut as they were cleaning the dogfish, great day on the water. TOP

Landed a nice Halibut and 2 big male Dungeness Crabs in the traps on the way in. Great day in the sunshine. We were in about 250ft of water using Herring, I like to look for a current switch up near noon, although with only a couple weeks of Halibut fishing to go I'll try any tide without the wind. TOP

Fished with Ting and his crew from Victoria. These fellows have fished the Victoria area for bottom fish together, but this was their first Halibut excursion. After anchoring up with an unsettled wind forecast, this crew did very well patiently waiting through a cool wind and some choppy water with no strikes. Finally early afternoon a Halibut began to steal bait off one of the lines. We rebaited and reeled down on him while he was nibbling, hooking into the large Halibut, first any of this crew had ever seen. Two nice Dungeness Crabs in the traps on the way in. Great reward for these guys. TOP

That Hali was followed by 2 more identical fish, one got off at the side of the boat as he just had the hook in his lip, the other was landed by Malloy. We were anchored in 240ft of water using Cod heads, Herring and Mackeral. One nice Dungeness Crab in the traps on the way in. TOP

Early 6:30am start schedulled with guests that did not show up. Last day of the Halibut season, I invited an old friend and fellow guide John Chau from "Gotcha" Salmon Charters out for a day of Halibut fishing. Ran out in the fog and set up on a spot neither of us fish often at all, but had heard was producing fish. John had brought some awesome salmon bellies as bait and we put those down on spreader bar systems with large sharp "J" hooks with short strong mono leaders. Anchoring the boat in 260ft of water, we drifted into as shallow as 180ft. Getting to around noon, John had a big pull down on his rod that stuck hard, we were into a big one. Our last fish of the Halibut season aboard 2 Reel ended up being a whopping 60lbs. John and I split the spoils of the trip back at the dock, good day. TOP
