EAST SOOKE PARK

Aylard Farm (also known as East Sooke Park) is an adventure in itself. You can spin cast for coho from Beechy Head or poke around in the tidal pools. There is also a fabulous group picnic site with a large open field perfect for flying a kite. If you plan on hiking the entire park you should take enough food and water for at least a full day, layered clothing and don't forget to tell someone about your plans! FRENCH BEACH PROVINCIAL PARK

This 59 hectare park is situated on the Strait of Juan de Fuca 5 km east of Jordan River. There are plenty of hiking trails that will lead you through second growth forest of Douglas fir, Ditka spruce, western hemlock and western red cedar to the beach. Once on the beach, there are excellent opportunities to observe orca whales as well as seabirds, bald eagles, and ospreys. Otters, seals, and sea lions can also be seen playing offshore. French Beach is located near the northern edge of the Olympic Peninsula rain shadow and receives more precipitation than Victoria but much less than areas to the northwest such as Port Renfrew or Bamfield. For more information check out www.frenchbeachpark.com

GALLOPING GOOSE TRAIL

Take a walk or a bike ride on the Galloping Goose, a 60 kilometer long trail that runs from just outside downtown Victoria all the way up to Leechtown, a deserted gold rush town approximately 14 kilometers north of Sooke. Originally, The Goose was a railroad track that carried amibitious gold panners back and forth but in 1996 "The Goose" became part of the national "Rail to Trail" project and was dedicated as part of the Trans-Canada trail. It now sees between 100,000 and 150,000 people walking, biking, rollerblading and horseback riding on it each year! For more information check out www.gallopinggoosetrail.com

SOOKE RIVER POTHOLES

About 2 kilometers from Sooke, the Goose meets and continues to run parallel to the Sooke River until it (the Galloping Goose) ends in Leechtown. Sooke River holds many interesting and exciting spots for young and old alike such as the Pot Holes, small secluded beaches, cliffs for diving and waterfalls that you can swim under. Stay the night at the TLC Campground and spend the day exploring! For more information on camping check out www1.conservancy.bc.ca/potholescamping or go to www.sookepotholes.com for more on the park itself. This site has some great photos!
