September 17, 2017

Fall salmon fishing is here and so are the larger Coho salmon which many call Northern Coho. These Coho are larger than the summer run Cohos seen showing up in late June, and provide awesome sport fishing opportunities. Many anglers fish the entrance to the Sooke River below the bridge toward the harbour from the shore. You can use spinning or fly fishing gear below the bridge, and are currently allowed to keep 2 hatchery marked Coho per person per day. October 1st the regulations will change for the Sooke harbour and also usually the Strait (area 20-5) for Coho fishing to allow for 1 wild Coho per person and up to 3 hatchery marked Coho. Please check the current regulations online or at your local tackle provider. Coho fishing in the Strait, trolling hootchies, bait or spoons is currently great. Boats are landing hatchery Coho averaging 6 to 10lbs, and some up to 13lbs or better. The good Coho fishing usually lasts until the end of October. Upcoming Coho salmon fishing derbies include the Port Renfrew Marina Derby Sept. 30th and Oct.1st, winner take all, $25.00 per rod and the Sooke Coho Derby put on by the www.sookesaltwaterseries.ca Oct.7th,multiple prizes, $50.00 per rod.

Tight Lines,

Ron

September 06, 2017 Morning Charter with Ron
Early 6:30am start schedulled with guests that did not show up. Last day of the Halibut season, I invited an old friend and fellow guide John Chau from "Gotcha" Salmon Charters out for a day of Halibut fishing. Ran out in the fog and set up on a spot neither of us fish often at all, but had heard was producing fish. John had brought some awesome salmon bellies as bait and we put those down on spreader bar systems with large sharp "J" hooks with short strong mono leaders. Anchoring the boat in 260ft of water, we drifted into as shallow as 180ft. Getting to around noon, John had a big pull down on his rod that stuck hard, we were into a big one. Our last fish of the Halibut season aboard 2 Reel ended up being a whopping 60lbs. John and I split the spoils of the trip back at the dock, good day. TOP

September 04, 2017 Morning Charter with Bob

Good job landing it boys, they usually put up a very good fight. TOP

Some wind and rain, we waited for the weather to calm down, and it did around noon. Jamie had some bait taken, then about 12:45pm my rod went down and stayed, it was Ryan's turn to reel in a Halibut for his 14th birthday. Although it put up a great fight, Ryan managed the 37lb Hali to the boat where it was harpooned and landed. Ryan's birthday wish come true. Six Dungeness Crabs in the traps on the way in. TOP

Finally some good weather and I'm out with our newest guide Mike, low winds, clear sunny skies, and we're anchored up for last of the season Halibut. We set the anchor in a favorite spot at 260ft of water and drift in the flooding(incoming) tide to 300ft. Rigging our double "J" hook set ups with Herring and Octopus, we pour coffees and wait. The sun shows off the light dusting of snow on the coastline, this is winter fishing! After a couple hours Mike sees a tap on the back rod, we had named "Laura", he reels down on a nice 36lb Halibut as the fish tugs on the baited hooks. Next I release a couple of "Dogfish"(sharks). After about an hour our rod "Erin" gets a tap, then some good pull downs, I'm on number 2, a good 26lb Halibut. With our limit, now the work begins, we pack up, pull the anchor, and back to the dock for filleting and vacuum packing. TOP

Fished the Sooke Coho Derby with 2Reel2 guide Bob Iles. The only thing better than winning or placing in the derby is landing a bunch of fish for yourself. Maybe not better, but still lots of fun. Bob's catch is on the left, mine on the right, he was using anchovy trolled in a red/chrome teaser head. I was using a "No Bananas" Skinny G spoon tolled at 80ft on the downrigger. We trolled South/North trolls until we found the fish. I lost some real nice ones on the spoon where Bob landed almost all of his fish. Thanks Bob for 10 years of great fishing. TOP

Tried to fish with Clay and his crew for Coho salmon, early morning start 7am. Heavy winds predicted, only a couple boats getting ready to leave.Dropped Crab traps in the harbour. Went around the corner at the spit to assess, turned around, high winds and choppy water. One other boat tried and turned around. Tried again at 10am with same results, crabbed until noon and called it a day. The boys took home some Dungeness and Redrock Crab. Lots of throw backs (too small, and females) in the traps. TOP

Fished with Derby guests Ryan and Mike competing in the 4th Annual Salmon Superbowl held by The Local Pub in Victoria. Target was larger winter Springs, we chose to fish the Victoria waterfront as I was familiar with the area, and it was close to the weigh in station. Fished 120/130ft of water with the gear on the bottom, landed the winning 11lb Spring at 9am, trolling a Gibbs "BonChovy" 3.0 G Force spoon behind a "BonChovy" flasher. Great day, dinner and prizes at the Local were outstanding thanks to owner Jeremy for his and staff's hospitality. TOP

Another R&D salmon fishing trip infront of Sooke Harbour Wednesday January 27th. Got out late 10:30am, hooked into this 8lb Spring right away on a "white lightning" Coho Killer trolled on a 2.5ft leader behind a bright green flasher at 120ft on the downrigger in 125ft of water. Calm water all day, probably played and released 10 undersized salmon to the boat. One other charter boat on the water reported landing 2 keepers from 8am to noon. TOP

Some R&D while looking after the dogs outfront Sooke harbour on Thursday January 14th. Released a bunch of shakers, kept 1 small Chinook for dinner, hooked into around 12 noon. Trolling "White Lightning" Coho Killer at 130ft on the downrigger in 125ft of water. Nice morning. TOP

January 07, 2016 Morning Charter with Ron
Fished with my father in-law Henry for winter Chinook salmon this morning out of Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina. Dropped 1 Crab trap on the way out and headed for the harbour mouth, looking for 130ft of water. Dropped bright green flashers down with anchovy and a glow hootchy on short 3ft leaders, ten or twelve feet behind the downrigger ball, keeping the boat in 130ft of water, we set the downriggers at 135ft. Started catching small Springs right away, landing a decent 6/7lb salmon on the first pass. Took the anchovy off to save bait and not damage the small Springs with the treble hook. Switched to a "white lightning" Coho Killer which was getting more hits than the bait anyway. Brought and released many small fish and landed 3 for us. Flat water, sunny skies, felt more like Spring time! No Crabs in the trap on the way in. Great day of winter Chinook fishing. TOP

December 22, 2015 Full Day Charter with Ron
Fished with Pieter, David and Don who got together and shared a Halibut and Crab fishing special out of Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina. Meeting early we dropped Crab traps leaving the harbour about 7:45am. Stronger than predicted Westerly winds met us around the spit, but we slowly continued to the Halibut spot, knowing calmer conditions were coming later in the morning. Dropping the anchor in 230ft of water,we soon had company as another sport boat anchored in the area. Spent a couple hours baiting with fresh herring until the incoming tide stopped and we had a nice strike on David's side that didn't hook up. Then Don shouted he something on as his rod as it bent over with a nice 25lb Halibut. Had a few other bites as the water calmed down, but no more Halibut. Returned to retrieve the Crab traps where we pulled 2 nice Dungeness Crabs. Great winter fishing with the crew going home with Halibut and Crab! TOP

December 12, 2015 Morning Charter with Ron
Could not help it, break in the weather drew my buddy Neil and I out for a day of Halibut and Crab fishing. Dropped 2 Crab traps in the shallows near the resort on the way out. North Easterly steady at 10 to 15km in the harbour. Played a nice 15lb Halibut in on herring on my side mid morning, while anchored in 270ft of water, Neil struggled with a few bites that did not materialize on his side. Poor weather slid in the afternoon and we "had our a$$@$ handed to us" if you know what I mean, nothing dangerous, just a friendly reminder from MOTHER NATURE! Nice to see RCM-SAR37 Sooke (volunteer search and rescue) training in the area. Two nice Dungeness Crabs in the traps on the way in. TOP

December 02, 2015 Full Day Charter with Ron
Fished with Nigel from Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina for Halibut,Salmon and Crab. Departed the docks at 7:30am, dropping 4 Crab traps on the way out. Outflow wind in the harbour from the North felt like 15km. Winds, choppy sea, and current died down about and hour after anchoring up and soon Nigel was into a nice 25lb Halibut, which took line off the reel a couple of times when he stopped reeling to rest. Minutes later we were into another smaller 15lb Hali, both fish biting on Herring dropped down into 240ft of water on double "J" hooks connected to spreader bars. Both fish in the boat before 11am, we put away the Halibut gear and motored to the Harbor mouth to fish for winter Chinooks. Nigel landed 2 small Chinooks, releasing 2 or 3 shakers, trolling a glow hootchy and a silver bucktail "Leo" lure behind green flashers at 130ft on the downriggers. We headed back to pick up the Crab traps where we found 2 nice Dungeness Crabs. Great day winter fishing. TOP

Fished with Wen,Mark and crew for Halibut and Crabs on another sunny, clear blue sky day in Sooke. 7:30am depature from Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina, we dropped Crab traps and set out for the Halibut grounds. Anchored in 220ft of water, and rigged herring and salmon spines, released a Rock fish, and a couple dogfish (small sharks). Then Wen had a good tug and reeled into a nice 20lb Halibut, his first time ocean fishing. A few minutes later he jumped onto the rod again with an even nicer 40lb'er. Great first time fishing for this group. No Crabs in the Crab traps. TOP

November 26, 2015 Full Day Charter with Ron
Fished with Jamie and his 2 boys Ryan and Seamus again for Halibut and Crabs, 7:30am start, winds were low out of the East. Anchored in 200ft of water and put down herring on one side and salmon spines down on Jamie's side. Mid morning Jamie started getting some tugs and reeled into a good 40lb Halibut on the salmon spine. Soon after we hooked into a Skate we released, which took about half an hour to get to the boat.1 good fish for the day we motored back to pick up the Crab traps and took 3 Dungeness and 2 Red Rock Crabs out for the boys to take home to Mom. Sunny skies and calmer water. TOP

November 24, 2015 Morning Charter with Ron
Met Larry and Ron at the dock for a 7:30am departure from Sooke Harbour Marina, looking to do some Halibut fishing. These fellows decided to split the cost of the trip and therefore the catch. Motored out to the spot and dropped the anchor in 200ft of water. Some light North Easterly wind kept things cool while we drank coffee and made sure the lines were on the bottom. While releasing a few Rock Cod, we saw a stronger bite on Larry's rod and reeled down on it , the hook buried into a decent Halibut and the guys took turns on the rod hauling it up to the boat. Gaffed and brought on board the crew had landed a nice 25lb Hali. Sunny dry weather, light winds, and 3 or 4 Orca whales chasing our anchor bouy as we pulled the anchor, made this trip even better. TOP

November 21, 2015 Morning Charter with Ron
Fished with Jamie and his boys Ryan and Seamus for Halibut. Ran out in some cool North Easterly wind and chop and dropped the anchor in 230ft of water on a pinnacle minutes from Sooke harbour. Showed the boys how to rig up herring on double "J" hooks. Caught a dogfish (small shark) almost right away, which the boys thought was very cool. Later in the morning when the flooding current started to slow down we had some good strikes that stole the bait. Then 1 hooked up and Jamie reeled in a small Halibut. Released a couple more Sharks and a Rockfish. Bob was out skippering 2REEL2 nearby, they also had 1 small Halibut for the day. Large Humpback whales were swimming around us in the area, incredibly huge! Lumpy ride back, at least we got 1, take a kid fishing! TOP

November 19, 2015 Morning Charter with Ron
Fished with my inlaws Bill and Bev for Halibut minutes from Sooke harbour. Dropped the anchor in 230ft of water and put down large herring on double "J" hook set ups with spreader bars. Current was flooding hard at first, then when it slowed and the boat began to turn on the anchor line, I had a small tug on my line. Then it pulled and held down, I reeled down hard into a big fish. We had it to the boat 3 times to measure, finally Bill drove the harpoon home into this short very fat Hali. We took care to head and tail lift the fish into the boat, measuring it out at 131cm and 70lbs. A perfect Halibut. Soon after Bill landed another 15lb hali for 2. Sat out the rest of the day until 3pm, pulled the anchor and headed home with a great catch and a sore arm. TOP

November 10, 2015 Full Day Charter with Ron
Fished with Mark, Matt and Amy from Washington state for Halibut and Crabs. Start time 7am, dropped the traps and headed out of the harbour on smooth water, slight wind out of the East, crew watched the sunrise as we made our way to the spot. Dropped anchor and showed the crew how to rig herring on double "J" hook spreader bar systems. Current was moving out contrary to the scheduled current flow, probably due to high Sooke River flow rates. We were alerted to the first Halibut strike by Amy's shout out, Matt grabbed the rod and landed a nice 25lb'er. Another fish struck soon after and Mark had a good battle with a 30lb Hali. Had some action on a Dog and Ratfish, and had to release some Rock Cod. Then Matt was putting his newly baited rig down closer to noon, tide had slowed considerably, and while the rod was still in his hands a big Halibut struck and pulled line out, he was on with a big fish. The fish made 3 trips back down to the bottom as Matt cranked it back up again, turned out to be a very wide and deep 75lb Halibut.Largest I had seen at the 133cm length limit.Crew very pleased with the haul, headed back in for the Crab traps which didn't have any keepers. Amazing day of Halibut fishing. TOP

November 04, 2015 Morning Charter with Ron
Fished with my mother in-law Bev for Halibut, 7am start from Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina. Dropped Crab traps in the harbour, headed out to a local Halibut spot close to the harbour entrance. Dropped the anchor in 230ft of water, rigged herring on double "J" hook set-ups,and dropped the bait down into a moving incoming tide. With in an hour my rod was bouncing hard with a nice 45lb halibut. Had to release a couple of Dogfish as the current slowed down, and Bev hooked into another smaller Halibut to make up our limit. Picked up 3 nice Dungeness Crabs in the traps on the way in. Great day fishing with family. TOP

October 24, 2015 Morning Charter with Ron
Fished with returning guest John and his friends Scott and Pat from Quebec for Halibut and Crabs. Despite a poor wind/weather prediction for the day we set out at 7:30am from Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina docks with the Halibut rods in the holders, and travelled for about 10 minutes before dropping anchor in 230ft of water. Soon Scott had some small pulls on his rod, we could hardly see, minutes later the rod tip went down hard with a nice 16lb Halibut, his first ever! After rebaiting with fresh herring and setting down we only had to wait about half an hour before Scotts' rod went down again, this time with a little larger Hali weighing in at 21lbs. Wind and waves picked up, we zipped down the canvass cover and brought out the coffee. Had to release a couple Dogfish and 1 Ratfish, no more Halibut action. Pulled the gear, and check the Crab traps on the way in taking 2 Dungeness and 1 Red Rock Crab. TOP

October 20, 2015 Full Day Charter with Ron
Fished with Jules,John and Peter from Alberta and Sooke for Halibut. Both 2REEL boats fishing, 2REEL2 out with Mike and his family for Coho salmon fishing. Ran out of the harbour at 7:30am and anchored on a spot close to the Sooke harbour mouth in 230ft of water while the tide was flooding briskly. Rigged herring and salmon bellies on new Gamagakatzu 9/0 "Big River Bait" hooks tied with 150lb monofilament leader line. Soon Peter noticed a twitch and a hard pull on one of the rods, the battle was on, and the boys had a 28.5lb Hali to the boat. A little later a 12lb Halibut took some salmon belly we presented on the other rod. 2REEL2 got into some Coho salmon with the crew landing 2 on their half day trip. Great flat water day with lots of sun shine. TOP

October 14, 2015 Morning Charter with Ron
Fished with Sooke local returning guests Kevin and Susan for Halibut. Moderate South Easterly wind and recent good results locally kept us on the East side of Otter Point,(spots closer to the harbour mouth have been producing more Hali). Anchored up in 235ft of water and dropped herring on spreader bar systems with double "J" hooks to the bottom. Current was ebbing briskly at that depth and our lines were quite stretched out-perfect! Kevin landed a smaller Halibut mid morning while the tide was still moving quickly. When the current slowed and the gear was straight, Susan's rod went down hard, the fish peeled line off the reel and we knew it was a good one. Kevin helped Susan battle the fish to the boat where after a quick measurement the big Hali was harpooned and brought on board. Back at the dock the fish's offical measurement was on the 133cm mark,(largest legal limit), weighing in at 59lbs. TOP

October 13, 2015 Morning Charter with Ron

Trolled for Coho salmon getting good spots of action, maybe 8 to 10 fish on, Al landed 2 on pink squirt and anchovy at 95 to 120ft on the downrigger. Switched to Halibut fishing mid day for a good slow flood in the afternoon which produced 2 Pacific Cod and a nice 25lb Halibut for this fishing couple. Flat water and sunny skies for the ride home to pull 2 good Dungeness Crabs out of the traps on the way in. TOP

October 10, 2015 Morning Charter with Ron
Fished with Bob from 2REEL2,and my father in-law Bill, in the Sooke Coho Derby. Started out at 7:30am and dropped the gear in about 300ft of water outside the Harbour mouth. Bob set an anchovy at 120ft, Bill put a "Deep Diver" down off the center rod with a small "Palco" dodger and a "Palco" spoon (old school). I ran a "Big Shooter" Lemon Lime flasher with an Ace Hi Fly Ultra Violet Laser trailing about 2ft behind it, at 90ft on the downrigger. We released 3 or 4 smaller wild Coho, while Bob landed a nice 1 about 9lbs. Bill landed 2 Coho on his back rod set up while I also had 3 or 4 Coho on my gear. Ended up with 5 Coho to 9lbs,(8.95). Congradulations to Bob for taking first place in the Sooke Coho Derby, winning $2100.00. Great morning of Coho fishing. TOP

Fished with Hank and Uncle Pete from the Sidney area, Pete had wanted to catch a Halibut this year. Rainy grey morning, we headed straight to local Halibut spot, travelling for only 7 minutes from the harbour mouth, dropped the gear in 230ft of water, and put herring down on double"J" hooks. Current was slow, and when it started to flood and got the gear moving, Pete got his Halibut on. Only one Halibut strike, released a couple of Dogfish (sharks). TOP

October 06, 2015 Morning Charter with Ron
Fished with my mother in-law Bev for Halibut and Crabs. 8am start we dropped 3 Crab traps in the harbour and headed out to a close-by well known Halibut rise on the "Neah Bay" blue map. Sunny skies with a S.E. wind produced some slightly rocky conditions on the anchor in 235ft of water. Played one or two "dogfish" (small sharks) to the boat, but no Halibut strikes. Pulled the anchor and headed to another spot for the rest of the day. Put down herring and salmon bellies and landed a 16lb Halibut and a big Pacific Cod on the herring. Water flattened out for our ride home,8 big Dungeness Crabs in the traps-our limit! Great sunset. TOP

October 03, 2015 Full Day Charter with Ron
Fished for Halibut with Ron and Debra whom were out last week on a salmon fishing trip. Departing the dock at 8am now, we dropped the crab traps on the way out, and headed the fishing spot. Dropped anchor in 235ft of water, the tide was flooding (coming in).Put herring and salmon bellies and spines down on spreader systems with a 2lb ball and waited. Clear blue sunny skies, with a little SE chop on the water. Sat through a tide change with no strikes, and had to let more line out for a bit of a strong ebb, when the line started pumping with a Halibut for Debra. We pulled 2 nice Dungeness Crabs out of the traps on the way in. TOP

Returning guest from Holland - Maurice and tim from the Sooke River Campground came out for a day of Halibut and Salmon fishing. Motored straight to an anchoring spot in 235ft of water 10 minutes from the dock, loaded the speader bar "J" hook combinations with herring and set down into a brisk out going current. Waiting for the current to slow down and go to slack water Tim had his rod pound with a nice 20lb Hali after a couple hours. Maurice began to cast a shad with a bright red tail on a "lead head" jig only about 8oz. After 2 or 3 casts he hooked up a Rock Cod and an even bigger 25lb Halibut with no fresh bait on a spinning rod he brought from home. Had 1 other hard strike at the slack which after 2 attempts did not hook up. We switched up to salmon fishing and headed towards Otter Point, ended up releasing 2 wild Coho keeping 1 hatchery Coho and 1 small Jack Spring. TOP

September 25, 2015 Morning Charter with Ron
Fished for salmon with Wayne and his crew on a half day morning trip. Trolled anchovy on one side and pink hootchie (squirt) on the other way out to 500ft of water, where it was quiet. Fished with the same crew as yesterday,Dave,John,Brian and Al loaded their lunches and extra clothes onto the boat for a 7am departure from the dock. Striking out on salmon yesterday, and blown off the water, the crew was excited to be heading up the coast to fish for Halibut today. Arriving at the spot we found the current to be too strong to anchor, so we drifted herring using spreader bar set ups and started catching fish after 2 passes. The boys landed 9 fish in total including 4 Halibut, 4 Pacific Cod,1 Arrowtooth flounder and another 5 Dungeness Crabs. Morning started out with some swells which mellowed out by the afternoon as the sun came out. TOP

Things were quiet until we got to Otter Point where we landed 2 nice Springs, one on each set up. Continued to troll to the Halibut spot, no more salmon bites. Changed over to anchoring the boat in 150ft ft of water between Otter and Sheringham Points. The tide was ebbing at about 1.5kts which put the gear at about a 45 degree angle in the rod holders. We put herring down on double "J" hooks connected to spreader bars with 2lb weights on them. Blake took the first nice hit which came at about 1:30pm, 2 hours after anchoring up.It was a nice 30lb Halibut. The next one was John's at about 15lbs, and the last good bite was a nice Pacific Cod to add to the white meat portion of our day. Great day, flat water and sunny skies. TOP

March 03, 2015 Full Day Charter with Ron
Fished with returning guest Kelly, whom brought out his friends Larry and Loretta from Alberta. Calm water and clear sunny skies as we motored around the spit into the straight. Trolled for Spring salmon from the Harbour mouth towards Otter Point with the gear at 135ft on the downriggers. Put down anchovy on one side and a silver spoon on the other behind a purple onion, and a bright green flasher. Started hitting fish at the Otter Point trailer park on the first pass, had at least 8 salmon hit the gear, playing many near the boat, landing two. Wind came up from the East around noon, cutting our trip short, no bites after 12 noon. TOP

Fished with returning guests Don,Cheryl, and Andy for Spring salmon, early morning start 7am from Sooke Harbour. Started out at Harbour mouth in 120ft of water trolling West towards Otter Point. Put the gear down to 135ft, trolling a 3.5" silver Coyote spoon, and an anchovy in a glow Oki style bait head. Had a nice double header infront of the trailer park on the first pass and another good Spring as we approached Otter Point. Dropped the anchor for some Halibut fishing between Otter and Sherringham Points, but there was no current, didn't have any Halibut strikes. Tried trolling in the late afternoon for salmon again, but they were off the bite. Great calm water and sunny skies lasted all day long. TOP

TOP
